The latest decision in the Cynthia Simpson case strikes a blow against equal access for modern Pagan faiths.
"A federal appeals court has ruled against a priestess of the Wiccan faith who argued that she should be eligible to give the opening prayer when a local board of supervisors meets. Cynthia Simpson sued Chesterfield County after she was excluded from a list of religious leaders allowed to pray at Board of Supervisors meetings."
This loss in the federal appeals court comes after a win in the district courts. Simpson plans to request a full-court review of the decision. Keep in mind that this case was to allow inclusion not to stop public prayer before local city council meetings.
"The policy on its face demonstrates a use of the prayer program that advances certain faiths and disparages others. The core fact is Ms. Simpson was denied the opportunity to participate in this forum because of her religion." - Rebecca Glenberg of the American Civil Liberties Union (Cynthia Simpson's attorney)
So if this full-court review fails should modern Pagans push instead for the removal of public prayer (as in the Darla Wynne case) if we can't have inclusion?
