Swung By Seraphim is a blog run by me, Jason Pitzl-Waters (AKA DJ ZoZo) a DJ living and working in Urbana, Illinois (home of the University of Illinois). I do a "Goth and Darkwave" weekly radio program, spin at various live events and write a music column for a slightly hip Pagan magazine.

I'm doing this blog to break from the popular consensus that any music that dares draw "Goth" fans is somehow less worthy or brilliant. In fact, I dare posit that some of these bands may end up being lauded by the critics who now scorn them or lump them in with superficial shock-rockers.

  Zadera - Fallen (clip) Mp3
I'm in the process of getting permission to post the whole song.

Zadera

Band Bio:
A renowned German underground-band from Magdeburg delicately blending their Post-Punk and Goth influences to an exciting personal mixture. Their musical style ranges from up-tempo-pogo-stomers to atmospheric melancho-smashers, a variety that makes pigeon-holing absolutely impossible. - Strobelight Records - Zadera page

Reviews:
I truly couldn't find a review of this band online, so here is a bit of information taken from their homepage (translated from German).

"We all have a different and individual musical background. In the attempt to make something out of this and because of the orientation on the traditional Batcave-Sound We create the music that is characteristically for "ZADERA". The style itself is diverse in general. Meaning there are fast, guitar riff based songs as well as the more atmospheric and calm songs. That maybe makes it difficult to find a definite expression for it. After all we like the 80s Batcave and bands like Christian Death, Xmal Deutschland, Siouxsie & the Banshees. Well, just make up your own mind and listen to our songs." - Zadera Homepage

My Two Cents:
For my money this track typifies what Goth music is all about. Maybe I'm just getting old, but to me it harkens back to all the old touchstones of what I think of when I think of a "Goth" sound. I don't see this as a bad thing, especially when bands like Interpol get so many accolades for mining the post-punk sound why not have bands who take the best elements of early Goth and create something fresh with it. Strobelight records is releasing a full-length by them in October, be sure to pick it up.
